KOJO Productions is a local theatrical production company that focuses on the growth and development of young people in our community. The company began in 1999 with the writing of the play, Buffalo Soldiers, The Legacy. In 2007, KOJO was established as an LLC (Limited Liability Corporation) and reorganized in 2012 as KOJO Productions Inc., a 501 (c)(3) non-profit. In 2009, KOJO launched its first theater production, Buffalo Soldiers, The Legacy, which was produced and performed at the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, Wisconsin. In addition, KOJO Productions received its first theatrical award for excellence, The Liesl Blockstein Award for Distinguished Community Service in the Arts, from the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission.
KOJO Productions has been in existence for over 20 years in the Madison area, developing its reputation as a respected and valued contributor to that community by offering the following student-focused activities:
- Attitude and motivation classes
- Problem-solving and mediation sessions
- Drill and step team performance groups
- Personal artistic opportunities
- Theatrical and spoken word presentations
KOJO has not only created theatrical productions, but also actively supported and initiated many programs including, The Mystery of Black History Series, M.Y.P.L.A.C.E. (Madison Youth Practicing, Learning and Achieving Cultural Excellence), and Remember to Believe Youth Summits as well as start-up programs that include Naima’s Vintage Jewelry and Next of Kin Acapella vocal group.
